MARYVILLE - Atmos Energy personnel plugged a ruptured gas line behind Maryville Towers around 12:20 p.m.
Workers made four trips into the hole where the line was leaking, wearing protective gear and protected by a curtain of water sprayed by the Maryville Fire Department.
The rupture occurred in a three-quarter-inch line, according to fire department spokesman David Hodges, but he said that line was fed by a four-inch line, which made the pressure intense.
A roaring hiss came from the hole for about two hours before the line was plugged.
The ventilation system at Maryville Towers, a residential facility for the elderly, was turned off to keep gas from getting into the building.
It is now being turned back on.
The break occurred in an apparently unmarked gas line as the company worked on it.
Several blocks were cordoned off by police.
More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
